Discover the Untamed Beauty of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary
Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary
Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Bichhiya near the town of Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh and in the heart of Terai region. It spread across the lush flood plains of the Upper Gangetic belt, this hidden gem is part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve and offers a exciting rare mix of jungle adventure, river magic, and energetic biodiversity.
Katarniaghat is established in 1975 and it grown into one of the most ecologically diverse protected areas in North India near Indo-Nepal boarder. With its dense forests, winding riverbanks, and peaceful wetlands, it’s the perfect place and wildlife getaway for nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and anyone seeking a true and memorable wilderness experience.
Forests, Rivers & Wildlife That Seems Real
Katarniaghat sanctuary boasts a blend of sal forests, wetlands marshy grasslands and river-based habitats all nourished by the powerful Ghaghara River. These varied environments house everything from grand Bengal tigers and calm elephants to timid swamp deer and the scarce Gangetic dolphin.
A jeep safari offers the best way to discover the sanctuary allowing you to cruise through the Motipur and Kakraha safari areas. These spots are famous for tiger presence and although you can't be sure to see one, the excitement and untamed nature of the place turn each safari into an unforgettable experience.
The area is not only beautiful, but also very important for nature. It creates a connection between forest areas in India and Nepal for wildlife to travel. Dudhwa Tiger Reserve looks after several initiatives to protect the area. Examples are patrols for anti-poaching, teaching local communities and making efforts to save nature. Because of this, rare and endangered animals have a protected place to live. Some of these are the Hispid hare barking deer, gharial and dolphins.
You should plan your trip to Katarniaghat between November and June. Cold weather in winter helps animals and birds become easier to watch. The summer heat often brings animals to places with water, so you are more likely to find them there. During the heavy floods and rain of monsoon (July to mid-November), the sanctuary is not open.

Don’t Miss the Boat Safari:
Unlike most other wildlife parks, Katarniaghat gives visitors a chance to enjoy a boat safari on the Ghaghara River. This experience offers both relaxation and excitement. From the boat, you might see gharial crocodiles basking on the riverbanks, turtles gliding just below the water's surface, or even catch sight of a Gangetic dolphin jumping out of the water.
This calm leisurely journey provides a welcome break from rough jungle roads and allows you to sync with the natural pace of the forest and river.
Birdwatchers' Paradise:
Bird enthusiasts will find plenty to love here. Katarniaghat houses more than 350 bird species, including kingfishers, hornbills, owls, eagles, and many winter visitors. Make sure to pack your binoculars—and be prepared to hear more birds than you can spot.
People who enjoy walking can take guided nature hikes to experience the forest's calm environment. The sunlight filtering through the tall sal trees, the soft buzz of insects, and the sporadic warning cry of a langur—each element pulls you further into the wild.
